Mary J. Blige Responds To Charity Criticism

Mary J. Blige called New York radio personality Angie Martinez to respond to reports that her charity, FFAWN, was misrepresenting funds. FFAWN – including its co-founder Steve Stoute – was reportedly sued recently sued by TD Bank for failure to pay a $250,000 loan the charity took out in June 2011. The organization had agreed to pay the loan back by December 2011, however, only $368.33 of that loan amount had been paid back.

Speaking with Angie, Mary discussed mismanagement, and revealed that she’s only now finding out about the organization’s troubles.

Mary said:

“FFAWN has been mismanaged and when I found out about all these issues, I immediately got on the phone with my lawyers and my advisers and tried to fix this so that none of those women would suffer. My goal is to do exactly what I set out to do. My motives were true and upfront. I set out to empower and encourage women, but it turns out the business part of it was not managed properly.”

She added:

“I just found out that when you don’t hire the right people and have them in the right places, doing the right things, and they don’t have the same motives that you do, your business suffers. And there’s a business to giving as well. So you have to have the right people to make sure everybody’s straight.”

However, Mary assured that the group would not be closing down and that she was making sure that everything is on the up and up as it moves forward. She noted that already there is a new team in place to handle the recent troubles. As for the young women who were at risk of losing their scholarships, Mary said she came out of her own pocket to make sure those young people in need were taken care of.

Just as soon as the Mary J. Blige crispy chicken wrap debacle blows over, Mary releases the song that was the foundation for “The Crispy Chicken Song.”

Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige just dropped the visual for the jam, “I Don’t Mind.” The clip features Mary J. dressed in a black cat suit singing about how she doesn’t mind telling her man she loves him. Though the song and video are decent, it will conjure memories of Mary’s Burger King commercial because the hook of “I Don’t Mind” was used as the melody for “The Crispy Chicken Song.”

Mary J. Blige’s charity has taken a whole lot, but has barely given back, according to a bank that claims it lent the foundation $250,000, but only got $400 back.
The Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now is being sued by TD Bank over a $250k loan it took out back in June 2011.
The suit filed earlier this month in New York, says the foundation agreed to pay the money back by December 2011, but when the time came to pay up, the organization had only paid $368.33 towards the loan. The bank claims it has demanded payment in writing on February 7 and 29, but hasn’t heard back from the foundation.
This lawsuit isn’t the only trouble the foundation is facing. The org. also didn’t file a tax return for 2010 and it’s also being sued by musicians from a 2011 fundraising gala who claim when it came time for payment they were stiffed.
A rep for Blige says, “The Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation For The Advancement Of Women Now, Inc. (FFAWN) is presently transitioning its management and headquarters.”
The rep adds, “We remain committed to our mandate of helping women gain the confidence and skills necessary to reach their full individual potential.”

This past weekend was a busy one for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Two of R&B’s biggest divas performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at two major events over the weekend. The Urban Daily wants you to rate their performances.

Mary J. Blige performed the nation’s anthem at the Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon. Many called her performance flawless. Decked in her Kentucky Derby church best, Mary belted out the anthem with ease and poise.

Later that night, Marsha Ambrosius was in Las Vegas to perform the song to kick off the Mayweather/Cotto boxing match. While there were some rough spots, Ambrosius did a good job. Some weren’t fans of her signature vibrato, but fans of hers enjoyed it.

Looks like Mary J. Blige is benefiting from some positive P.R. for a change. After the disastrous Burger King “Chicken Wrap” commercial, Blige has come out of hiding to play “Pretty Woman” to one of her fans. A Cleveland radio station Z107.9, held a contest where the winner would get to spend a day with the Queen of Hip Hop & Soul.

The winner, named Candis, had lunch with Blige at Mr. Chow’s, followed by some serious retail therapy on Rodeo Drive. Watch some of the highlights in video below:

Add another name to the list of pop stars who have sold out to big corporations making that bank. R&B songstress Mary J. Blige sings about chicken wraps in a new Burger King commercial – watch the video below.

The lyrics describes ”Crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, three cheeses, ranch dressing wrapped up in a tasty, flour tortilla,” Mary sings, infusing that ingredient rundown with a soulfulness that suggests she’s in on the joke. It doesn’t help that the product in question is chicken, which comes peppered and seasoned with all sorts of racist connotations. After the public outcry the ad has disappeared from Burger King’s YouTube channel.
