How Did “Red Tails” Do At The Box Office?

Hollywood didn’t believe that Black America will support a movie like Red Tails, and many African-Americans made it a point to make to see the film this weekend to help boost the box office numbers. But how did Red Tails do on its first weekend in theaters?

5 Historic Sites African Americans Must Visit

The movie is exceeding expectations even though, studio execs didn’t expect the support to last. Red Tails surpassed the $15-$18 million it was projected to make in the first weekend by pulling in $19.4 million. On Friday, January 20th it earned $6-8 million thanks to busloads of African-Americans coming to midday screenings.

Red Tails is this weeks No. 2 film, finishing behind Underworld Awakening starring Kate Beckinsale and Michael Ely, which should brought in $25.2 million. (Not bad, since Red Tails was on almost 500 fewer screens than Underworld Awakening.)

This movie scarred me back when I was a kid. I couldn’t go to sleep because I thought Freddy would attack me. Enough drama, the remake of the 1984 “A Nightmare on Elm Street” sits all alone this weekend.

The closest competitor was the kid friendly “How to Train Your Dragon,” which actually dropped 30% from last week in receipts making a whopping $10.8M. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” sits alone on top of the weekend box office by a wide margin. The nightmare pulled in $32.2M.

To round out the top 5 in theaters this weekend; coming in third place was “Date Night” taking in $7.6M. In fourth was Jennifer Lopez’ “The Back Up Plan”, followed by the comedy “Furry Vengeance” in fifth place.

Jennifer Lopez is back on the big screen after years of waiting. She starred in the weekend movie “Back Up Plan” that took in over $12M this weekend, but was it #1?

“How to Train Your Dragon” warded off its critics to rule the box office after five-weeks on the big screen, bringing in 15-million dollars. Romantic comedy “The Back Up Plan” took in 12-point-three-million for second place, with “Date Night” holding firm in its third week with ten-point-six-million dollars.

Action comedy “The Losers” pulled in less-than-expected numbers for fourth place. That film brought in about nine-point-six-million dollars. Another action comedy, “Kick Ass,” got beat up at the box office to come in fifth for the weekend, with revenues falling 52-percent below the previous weekend’s levels.

Early Weekend Box Office Receipts Favor "Date Night"

The early results are in for receipts at the box office this weekend. “Date Night” kept cash registers busy to the tune of nine-point-three-million dollars during its first day of release. The romantic comedy stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Clash of the Titans is in second spot for the weekend to this point, with an eight-point-four-million dollar take. The number come courtesy of tracking firm, Bod Office Mojo. The “Date Night” story is that of a suburban couple chased by crooks in a case of mistaken identity. Some observers think “Clash” will regain the top slot once studios provide their estimates for the three-day period Sunday. Completing the top five in the early going, “How to Train Your Dragon,” with seven-point-one million, “The Last Song,” at three-point-six million and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” with three-and-a-half-million dollars.

The early results are in for receipts at the box office this weekend. “Date Night” kept cash flowing in theaters to the tune of $9.3M during its first day of release.

The romantic comedy stars the hilarious Steve Carell and Tina Fey. “Clash of the Titans” is the takes the 2nd spot for the weekend so far with $8.4M. The numbers come courtesy of Box Office Mojo.

Completing the top five is “How to Train Your Dragon,” with $7.1M, “The Last Song” with Miley Cirus at $3.6M and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too” with $3 and half million dollars.

Hollywood’s most expensive movie ever launched with an estimated $73 million Friday-Sunday that fell short of 2009′s opening-weekend record, but, with awards season, word of mouth and less snow presumably primed to fuel weeks of ticket sales, set the James Cameron space epic on a course to potentially become one of Hollywood’s top money-makers of all time.

Elsewhere, if the question was Did You Hear About the Morgans?, the box-office answer was no.

Running through the standings:

• Avatar‘s opening-weekend audience was mostly male (57 percent), over age 25 (62 percent), parked in a 3D theater (59 percent)—and pleased. Fox said moviegoers graded Cameron’s first dramatic film since Titanic an A.

• Worldwide, Avatar grossed $232.2 million, the studio said, a record for a non-sequel, non-franchise film opening amid an East Coast blizzard.

• Avatar‘s ultimate success is TBD. Said Fox exec Chris Aronson: “We have always felt this movie is a marathon, not a sprint.”

• If the budget-buster keeps making money mid-week, if it stands down Sherlock Holmes next weekend, Avatar may be on its way to $300 million, Exhibitor Relations’ Jeff Bock said, a domestic take that would put it, more or less, among Hollywood’s top 30 films of all-time.

• Here’s why it would be bad for Avatar to play out like New Moon: New Moon made more than half of its money in its first, crazy, record-setting 72 hours. If Avatar does that now—if it flames out fast—it’s sunk like Titanic, the maritime disaster. (Fast and furious was fine by New Moon, which cost a fraction of the who-knows-how-big-its-budget-was Avatar.)

• Among this year’s openers, Avatar‘s weekend ranks as the sixth-biggest, behind Star Trek, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and, at No. 1, New Moon, which broke the bank with nearly $143 million.

• Sure, the snowstorm hurt Avatar—the movie’s ticket sales on Saturday were down as much as 86 percent in slammed regions like Baltimore—but it apparently took out most of its wrath on Hugh Grant‘s and Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Did You Hear About the Morgans?, which opened in fourth place, with just $7 million.

• The Princess and the Frog, last weekend’s No. 1 film, fell to second, with a presumably snow-depressed $12.2 million.

• Among holdovers, Up in the Air ($3.1 million; $8.1 million overall) got a Golden Globes bounce; Invictus ($4.2 million; $15.8 million overall) didn’t.

• Peter Jackson‘s The Lovely Bones didn’t get great reviews, as might be expected, and isn’t getting awards-season buzz, as was expected. To make matters worse, it looks like it got taken out by the same Did You Hear About the Morgans? storm: $41,000 at three theaters, down 65 percent from last weekend.

• Among Oscar hopefuls bowing in limited release, Nine ($246,933 at four theaters) performed way better than its reviews. Everything else failed to match Avatar‘s $21,147 per-screen average, although Jeff Bridges‘ Crazy Heart ($82,204 at four theaters) came pretty close.

• 2012‘s Top 10 run ended after five weekends. Worldwide, the $200 million movie has made $733 million—yes, $733 million.
