There are so many amazing perks that have come out of the Lion King promo this week. Sure, we get to hear from the cast and director of the highly anticipated flick — but most importantly, we get an actual Beyonce interview out the whole thing.

That’s right. The queen Bey is using her speaking voice as she chats with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts about her role as Nala, and how the Lion King soundtrack, which she curated and produced, is “a love letter to Africa”.

We also get new music from the star, whose clearly gunning for her Emmy and Oscar this year.

And let’s not forget the glorious, voluptuousness that is her new MILF bod. Those thick thighs are certainly out here saving lives.

But back to that interview, though! It’s been years since we’ve seen an actual sit down interview with Bey. The most we’ve heard her speak in the last decade was when she was receiving an award. In case you forgot about her deep, sultry, southern voice, hit the flip to check out some of the times Beyonce’s accent was THICKKK.

Little Known Black History Fact: James H. McGee

James H. McGee became Dayton, Ohio’s first Black mayor on July 15, 1970, and to date remains its longest tenured.

James Howell McGee was born November 8, 1918 in Berryburg, W. Va., and raised in Steubenville, Ohio. After graduating from Wilberforce University, McGee served a short time in the U.S. Army then entered law school at Ohio State University, finishing a three-year course in two years.

McGee worked early on with the Dayton NAACP, filing several landmark cases on the organization’s behalf. In 1967, McGee was tapped to replace Dayton’s first Black city commissioner, Don Crawford. Three years later after Mayor Dave Hall retired with an illness, McGee was appointed to the role, as he was the most experienced of the commissioners.

The role was largely ceremonial but McGee did address the concerns of Black and white Dayton residents equally with his politically moderate approach. The Alpha man and Prince Hall Freemason member did generate some criticism from Black groups because he was not more progressive but was able to successfully challenge those views.

McGee passed in 2006.

Here’s Proof That Even A Blackout Can’t Stop New Yorkers From Showing Their Talent

Overview of New York city

Source: Visions Of Our Land / Getty

They call New York the greatest city in the world for a reason. The city itself is always up and on, and the people are all looking for their next come up.

NYC is the city of hustlers. There’s a singer, dancer, designer, actor or artist at every corner and on every train car. And don’t think for a second that the hustle stops when something out of the ordinary comes along and disturbs the peace.

On Saturday, there was a blackout in Manhattan that affected more than 72,000 New Yorkers along 30 blocks from Times Square to the Upper West Side. Mayor Bill de Blasio said police confirmed there was no foul play involved and that the outage was caused by a “mechanical issue.” Fun fact, the outage came 42 years to the day after The Great Blackout of 1977.

Fortunately there were no reports of people getting hurt or losing their ish. Judging by footage of the incidents, it looks like the streets were still pretty lit without lights — no pun intended. And the outage certainly didn’t stop these New Yorkers from coming together and spreading their love and talent all over the city.

Ladies and gents, this is an example of what America could be.

Murder Mystery: Adam Sandler & Jennifer Aniston Talk ‘Friends’, Making It Big & More

[anvplayer video=”4698970″]
Not too many people can pull of crude, slapstick comedy quite like Adam Sandler — just add Jennifer Aniston to the mix and you’ve got yourself the perfect comedy flick. Last time the dynamic duo teamed up was back in 2011 with the now cult classic Just Go With It. But the hilarious pair have join forces once again for Murder Mystery.

The Netflix original film tells the story of a New York cop and his wife who go on a European vacation to reinvigorate the spark in their marriage, but end up getting framed and go on the run for the death of an elderly billionaire. And needless to say, the film was clever and funny AF — all one hour and 37 minutes of it.

I caught with Adam and Jennifer and they dished on murder mysteries, Saturday Night Live, and of course, Friends. When asked about his favorite Friends episode, the Happy Madison Productions founder said:

“The one where Rachel spills hot coffee on herself. That was the best one. Come on, do it again!”

As for Jennifer’s favorite SNL skit starring Sandler, she quickly answered:

“Oh I love Opera Man! Love it. It was so good.”

Adam joked, “I use to wear the Opera Man wig, and sing to Jen!”

If you haven’t seen Murder Mystery, then what are you waiting for?

Catch the Kyle Newacheck directed film on Netflix now. Check out the full video above to see what else the stars had to say.

Bye, JD: These Female Emcees Have (Stripper-less) Bars For Days

The American Society Of Composers, Authors And Publishers (ASCAP) 26th Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards - Arrivals

Looks like Jermaine Dupri has caused quite a stir on Al Gore’s internet. The music industry vet usually stays pretty low key, but as of late, he’s been a little more publicly vocal than usual. Earlier this week, JD chatted with People Now and dished on his feelings about the current state of female hip hop.

“I feel like they’re all rapping about the same thing. I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s, like, strippers rapping. At some point, somebody is going to have to break out of that mold.”

Boy oh boy, did that strike a nerve. Many people assumed that JD was talking about Cardi B when he made the comment, and apparently so did she. The stripper turned rapper went off on Dupri during an Instagram Live session on Thursday.

“First of all, I rap about my p— because she’s my best friend and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear. When I did ‘Be Careful‘ people was talking mad s— in the beginning like ‘What the f— is this?’ ‘This is not what I was expecting”

She went on to name a slew of female emcees that don’t rap about “vajayjays” and stripping.

“I feel we need to put these girls in more magazines and blogs. Radio DJs play these girls. These girls can rap they asses off and they don’t rap about their vaginas and sucking d—.”

And Cardi has a point. You’d think that someone has seasoned as JD would do a little more research before discrediting an entire demographic of artists. But this just further proves that some folks are just out of touch with what’s going on today. But don’t worry JD, we got you.

Hit the flip for a list of DOPE female rappers whose subject matter will literally blow your mind.

Crissle West & Joe Budden Divide The Internet Over A$AP Rocky’s Detainment, But Here’s Who We’re With

Anytime something huge goes down in our culture, it’s to be expected that people will have different perspectives and opinions on the matter. We’ve seen the Internet divide into two polarized groups when it comes to huge things like race and politics, and even smaller issues like whether or not we should cancel Kanye.

But when it comes to Black issues, the polarization is on a whole other level. Either you’re with the popular opinion, or you’re deemed ignorant, non-empathetic, or just plain ol’ bitter. A lot of that energy has been going around after news broke about A$AP Rockys arrested and him being detained in a Swedish prison under inhumane conditions.

Many celebrities have taken to to social media to rally behind Rocky by posting the petition to help get him free.

But others don’t feel as strongly about freeing Rocky as others do. The Read podcast co-host Crissle West is one of the people who spoke out against the popular wave to free the Harlem rapper, and her reasoning was exceedingly valid. Plus she had receipts.

https://twitter.com/crissles/status/1148705674374914048

Joe Budden on the other hand is one of the celebs rooting for Rocky to be set free. So of course he clapped back at Crissle for her opinion on the matter.

“That nasty ass bum a** homegirl, I seen her put it out. It’s just like, you niggas that be preaching this pro black shit but get evil in a heartbeat…woo. Why can’t we let life teach people?”

If we use Joe’s logic, it appears that life is giving Rocky the very lesson that he needs. Way too often, we see rappers “make it” and totally forget about the conditions and culture that they come from; especially the young, Black artists.

They get a little bag, a little cross-over appeal and forget that they’re still Black men in American. They can still be arrested at the drop of the dime, solely based on the color of their skin. For Rocky, as a successful African American man with a huge platform, to say that it’s not his job to speak out on Black issues is a slap in the face. So why should said community go so hard to speak for him?

Maybe his friends in SoHo or Beverly Hills would be better suited to help him get out of the situation he’s in.

We definitely wouldn’t wish Rocky’s situation on anyone, EVER! But word to the wise, humble yourself, or life will do it for you. Good Luck to A$AP Rocky, his family and the rest of the mob.

Georgia Woman Says She Was Evicted For Having Black Guests

A Georgia woman is suing her former landlord, alleging that he evicted her because she invited her black co-worker to visit the home she was renting.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Victoria Sutton, a white woman, claims the couple who own the house launched into a racist tirade telling her they don’t allow black people on their property and that she would have to move out.

According to reports, the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia and the Cohen Milstein law firm filed the lawsuit Wednesday on Sutton’s behalf.

Patricia McCoy, Sutton’s landlord, reportedly brushed off the accusations of racism in the lawsuit.

“I’ve got best friends that’s black people,” she said in a phone interview.

McCoy said she asked Sutton to leave because the property was filthy, not because she had black guests.

“It took me four months to get it back to where I could rent it out again,” McCoy told the publication. “I could sue her and make her replace all the stuff she tore up in there. It cost me $5,000 to get the house (back to normal).”

According to the suit, Sutton was in a month-to-month rental agreement and moved into the property in August 2017.

In September 2018, Sutton invited a black man and his 5-year-old son over for a few play dates with her daughters before McCoy’s husband, Allen McCoy, appeared at her home and told her she would have to leave.

Attorneys for Sutton say the McCoys’ actions violate the federal Civil Rights Act and the federal and state Fair Housing Acts.

“This case is a clear reminder that the pervasive and insidious racism that led to the passage of the Fair Housing Act more than 50 years ago persists to this day,” said Brian Corman, an attorney with Cohen Milstein, a Washington law firm. “America thrives when people of all races and backgrounds are able to live in their communities without fear that they will be thrown out of their homes because of their race or the race of those with whom they associate.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Allen McCoy called Sutton a “(racial epithet) lover” and said he would call child protective services for having a “(racial epithet) on their property.” He told her she had two weeks to move out.

Sutton later called Patricia McCoy to plead her case to stay in the home. The suit claims that Sutton recorded that conversation. Patricia McCoy said she doesn’t believe there is a recording.

According to the filing, Patricia McCoy can be heard on the recording telling Sutton that she didn’t “put up with (racial epithets) in my (house) and I don’t want them in my property.” When Sutton told Patricia McCoy she had not “done anything to deserve this,” Patricia McCoy is accused of saying: “Maybe you like black dogs, but I don’t. So just get your stuff and get out.”

Police Seek Answers In ‘Suspicious’ Death Of Woman Found In Bathroom

Georgia police are looking for answers in the case of a woman who was discovered dead inside her apartment last month.

According to reports, the body of 39-year-old Fabiola Thomas was found in a bathroom by her roommate the morning of June 8.

A cause of death has not been determined, but police said the woman was seen walking around her vehicle in the parking lot of her apartment complex about half an hour before she was discovered dead.

Authorities said the body showed signs of trauma, and Thomas’ sister told Channel 2 Action News that police and family members haven’t been able to locate the woman’s cellphone since her death.

Detectives are searching for anyone who saw Thomas before 8 a.m. that Saturday, and investigators are looking to speak with anyone who knew her, said Sgt. Britney Rodgers, spokeswoman for Roswell police.

“We don’t have a cause of death and she was relatively young,” Rodgers told Channel 2. “We’re trying to find any information that may be out there just in case we don’t know something that we need to … The circumstances are suspicious and the cause of death is unknown.”

Anyone who had regular contact with Thomas or saw her in the days leading up to her death is asked to contact Roswell Detective Omar Jones at 770-640-4473 or ojones@roswellgov.com. Information can also be submitted anonymously to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta tip line at 404-844-8477 or the Crime Stoppers website.

What? It’s already been one year since Cardi B and Offset welcomed their baby girl Kulture into the world, but it feels like yesterday.

Remember, fans had been suspecting for months that the Grammy award winning rapper was with child, but it wasn’t until her classic performance on Saturday Night Live, when she revealed her baby bump, that the suspicions were confirmed.

Although papa Offset already had three kids, Cardi call all the hell from family, fans and friends for getting pregnant at what seemed like the most pivotal moment of her young career.  But someway, somehow, the Bronx rapper manages to pull it off, and then some.

After giving birth, Cardi’s steam didn’t slow down one bit. She was featured on damn near every number one song that came out, and her debut album Invasion Of Privacy was still shooting it’s way up the charts. On top of all that success, she got to experience the bliss of first time motherhood.

When Kulture was first born, Cardi didn’t share pics of her new born baby girl for months, in an attempt to protect her from Internet trolls. But all she had to was post Kulture’s adorable chunky foot for us to know that she was raising a precious bundle of joy.

In honor of baby Kulture’s first trip around the sun, hit the flip to take a look at some of her most heartwarming moments.

Amber Guyger’s Attorneys Want To Move Murder Trial Out Of Dallas County [Video]

Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger is going on trial for the shooting death of Botham Jean after mistaking his apartment as her own. However, her attorneys have filed a change of venue motion to move the murder trial out of Dallas County.

According to CBS 11, Guyger’s attorneys cite “prejudicial” and “inflammatory” media coverage as reasons to move the trial to another county. This comes after Guyger’s 911 call on the night the deadly shooting was leaked.

Guyger claims she thought Jean was a burglar in her Dallas apartment when she shot him on Sept. 6, 2018. In the 911 call, Guyger could be heard repeating “I thought it was my apartment” and also worrying about losing her job.

Her attorneys reportedly are arguing that, “The hysteria and false narratives have been pervasive and widespread, which have added significantly to the existing false narratives and hysteria that pervades in Dallas County, making a fair trail here impossible.”

Guyger last appeared in court on June 6, where the trial date was set for Sept. 6. It was on the last court appearance that judge Tammy Kemp gave a stern reminder about honoring the court’s gag order following the leak of the 911 call.

Black Doctor Says American Airlines Forced Her To Cover ‘Inappropriate’ Outfit With Blanket

A Black doctor spoke out after she said American Airlines humiliated her in front of her son and body shamed her for wearing a romper on a flight from Jamaica to Florida.

Dr. Latisha “Tisha” Rowe, who is from Houston, took a family vacation to Kingston with her 8-year-old son. Rowe, who is a family-medicine specialist and the founder of a telehealth company, said she and her son had just boarded their flight from Kingston to Miami when a flight attendant asked her to deplane for a private conversation.

In a tweet, Rowe said the attendant said her romper was inappropriate and asked if Rowe had a jacket or coat. When Rowe explained she didn’t have anything to cover herself with, the flight attendant said she would not be allowed back on the plane unless she changed. In the end, the flight crew gave her a blanket to wear and Rowe walked back to her seat “humiliated.”

Rowe posted a photo of the outfit she was wearing at the time of the incident.

Rowe checked her outfit in the mirror before she even left for the day.

“I turned, and I looked at my backside, and I kind of gave myself that, you know, girl check,” she told Business Insider. “Growing up, I lived in a very conservative household. Like, if my dad thought my shorts were too short, I was not leaving the house. So that’s just something that I’ve gotten into the habit of doing.”

Rowe believes there was nothing inappropriate about her outfit and that she was the victim of hypersexualization of Black women’s bodies.

“I have a very curvaceous body, and I put my body in bold colors, so you’re going to see it. But it’s not vulgar. It’s not inappropriate. It’s not bad, you know? If you put someone who’s a size 2 in the exact same outfit next to me, no one would be bothered,” she said.

According to Rowe, when she returned to her seat, she noticed her son was embarrassed and holding back tears.

“My automatic mommy protective mode started. I’m like, ‘how do I fix it?’ I don’t want to be in this situation. I just, I want this done,” she said.

The American Airlines’ contract of carriage does state that passengers must dress in appropriate attire for all flights, but the contract does not list prohibited clothing.

A statement from American Airlines spokesperson Shannon Gilson said the airline is investigating why Rowe was asked to cover up.

“We were concerned about Dr. Rowe’s comments, and reached out to her and our team at the Kingston airport to gather more information about what occurred. Unfortunately, we’ve been unable to reach Dr. Rowe or leave a message at the number provided. We want to personally apologize to Dr. Rowe and her son for their experience, and have fully refunded their travel. We are proud to serve customers of all backgrounds and are committed to providing a positive, safe travel experience for everyone who flies with us,” the statement read.

Since Rowe’s story went viral, others on social media have shown their support for her.

10 Cringeworthy Scenes From 90’s Flicks That Wouldn’t Hold Up In Today’s Climate

American Pie

Source: Universal Pictures / Handout / Getty

Ask anyone born before 2000, and they’ll agree that the 90’s was such a special time for everyone. Television was booming with Black talent and filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton weren’t afraid to tell the raw truth about the issues plaguing the African American communities. The entertainment industry also had the creative license to do and say whatever they wanted no matter what demographic they offended — hence the reason we have films like American Pie.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of American Pie, the raunchy 1999 comedy that follows four teenage boys (played by Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas) on a quest to lose their virginities before graduation. The movie was such a huge deal for young Americans when it hit theaters; but if watched by young adults today, they’d have a totally different reaction to some of those gruesome scenes.

Like the scene when Jason Biggs’ character sets up his computer camera to record the foreign exchange student changing her clothes, without her consent.

That’s a sexual crime lawsuit waiting to happen. With so many powerful, life changing movements shifting the climate today, (and a culture of people being offended by the smallest thing) there’s not much room to express oneself fully without offending someone. Obviously, we all need to be a bit more mindful of the content we put out, but hit the flip to check out scenes from films that just wouldn’t fly today.

Little Boy Begs Dad To Not Call Cops On Black Man Waiting For Friend To Let Him Into Building

Another white person has been caught on tape calling police on a black person because … well, just because.

In this case, the man, a father was begged by his tearful son not to do it, but we’re sure you know how that turned out.

The white man accused Wesley Michel, a black software engineer, who was visiting a friend at a San Francisco apartment building, of trespassing. The man, who has been identified as Christopher Cukor, asked to know the name of Michel’s friend who lived on the property. When Michel didn’t give his friends name, Cukor called police.

While his father was on the phone, according to the Daily Mail, the man’s son tugged at his jacket and pleaded with him to stop, saying: “Daddy, don’t.”

Michael can be heard saying, “I’m recording you right now and you’re going to be the next person on TV. Just remember that, and you have your son with you.”

Cukor responds, “You don’t need to threaten me, you just need to get out of the building.”

As he tells police that “there’s a trespasser in my building,” his son cries, “Daddy, don’t. It’s for better. I agree with him, daddy.”

Cukor continues talking to police and says the visitor is, “filming me and refusing to leave” continuing that he “tailgated through the door, as I left he walked in.”

Off screen, the man’s friend arrives and is warmly greeted before the white man finally puts his phone down.

The video was originally shared by Michel and was later shared online by activist Tariq Nasheed.

According to Nasheed, Cukor is a YouTube employee who has since deleted his social media accounts.
