Idris Elba is steaming up the August 2010 cover of UPSCALE magazine. And we’ve got a few quotables as he discusses his two kids and how he’s dealing with his increasing fame.

The shoot was done at Atl’s W Perimeter, and was shot by celeb photog Marc Baptiste. Here’s some quotables from the issue:

Idris on conquering his fears:
“..what’s the point in living if you’re not going to try anything?”

On looking forward:
“I’m not here to live off The Wire for the rest of my life. I want my artistry to be known.”

On dealing with increasing fame:
“You have to be accessible all the time…one can water down their worth if they’re over-exposed.”

On his kids:

He doesn’t like to talk about his two kids, 8 year old daughter and baby son, saying “I love children and I love my kids. But they’re not part of that (Hollywood) world.”

Loves it. Idris’ upcoming projects include a role on “The Big C” on Showtime and his movie Takers coming out this fall.

8 Most Common Phobias and How to Fight Them!

“I have a phobia of (fill in your answer here).” “I can’t stand (fill in your answer here)!” Surely, these words have popped out of your mouth at one point in time. I just don’t know what exactly you are afraid of, so that is something you have to tell me. I could always try to guess. Maybe something on my list of 8 most common phobias and how to fight them is something that you are afraid of. I’m not exactly qualified professional to tell you how to fight your phobias, so don’t take this as medical advice. However, I am going to give you my opinions and tell you how I would fight them.

8. Spiders

Oh yeah, so many people are scared of spiders. To be honest with you, I do not blame them! At one point in time, I was scared of spiders. Of course, to a certain point, I am too. But, I am only scared of certain spiders…like the big ones that pop out of nowhere as you’re sitting on a tuffet eating your curds and whey. I’m also afraid of the poisonous ones, like the black widow and brown recluse, which live in my region. However, I have my favorites that I like – like the wolf spider or the horned spider. How did I get over my phobia? If you call it getting over a phobia – I decided to get a tarantula, so I read all about them and got one. I would look at him, feed him and I actually held him. I see that they aren’t horrible creatures.

7. Snakes

Again, to a certain point, I am afraid of snakes, but they’re just trying to live, that’s all. You shouldn’t kill a snake just because he/she is in your yard, but if it’s venomous…I may have other words for that. I am not afraid of snakes, but I am afraid of the poisonous ones that we have in our area, like the rattlesnake, moccasin, coral snake and so on. Those are pretty scary when you come across one. I was afraid of all snakes, until I got a ball python and held him. I loved to hold him. I called him Sneaky Snakes.

6. Heights

Heights can be scary and I really don’t see any way to get over them. I mean, you could always crawl up on top of something, look down and tell yourself it’ll be alright, but that’s not true. Generally, people are afraid of things that will kill them. If you think you’re going to fall, then you shouldn’t let your guard down, you should be afraid of it. Is that a strange way of looking at things? I am afraid of heights if it involves climbing up and washing windows on the 50th floor – I would never do it. I do, however, like high up places, like being on the inside of a building and looking down. I like that “Scary” feeling I get. Strange, right?

5. Someone close to you dying

I know it is scary to think about losing someone in your life. It scares me too, but I have come to the fact that life is the way it is. Things happen and we have to learn to accept it. We also have to learn that every single person on this earth, no matter who or what you are has an expiration date. We never know when that is going to be. So, instead of sitting there, being depressed and thinking about someone dying, then you need to go spend time with them, get over the phobia and make every day of their life count.

4. Insects

Are you afraid of insects? This is one thing that I am not afraid of. I like playing with them. It’s fun. They’re fun to watch. If you’re afraid of them, maybe you should try touching one, like a Lady Bug. Don’t be scared and take deep breaths – ahh, see how easy it is.

3. Frogs

Oh, come on! You’re afraid of frogs? I find so many people who are afraid of these cute little guys and girls. Frogs are amazing creatures. I have had some pretty purple frogs as pets before. They’re cute – but you have to be careful when cleaning the type I had, because they produce toxins. Ever since I was a kid, I was known for playing with frogs and toads in my yard. Oh and it’s a myth – you don’t really get warts from them peeing on you! Try touching one!

2. Lizards

Oh, come on, you’re afraid of lizards? I’ve brought out my big Tegu to company before and they acted like she was a gator. Well, I guess she resembles one to people who don’t know much. She did have some pretty big teeth, but they looked at me like I was holding something scary and I look down at her like she’s my baby. I guess I’m known for holding things with sharp teeth that could take off your hand? lol. Anyhow, if you’re afraid of lizards, go to the zoo and watch them in their habitat. I won’t say they won’t hurt you, because I’ve been bitten before, but it’s only pain – pain is the sign of weakness leaving your body, like my dad always tells me. Don’t be afraid of these creatures.

Okay, I read somewhere that death is the leading phobia. Is this true? I know, I can sit and think and get deep into thought when it comes to death, but at some point, it gets depressing realizing that our life is short on this earth. Then, I wonder where we go – are we reborn? Do we go to a place called Heaven where we thrive forever? I know all you religious people will comment on this one and say you know for sure, so I’m not going to get into it and people should keep their opinions to themselves on that matter. Anyways, don’t be afraid of death. Well…be afraid of things that could cause death, to a certain point, but don’t sit there thinking about it all day. Don’t lock yourself away from fun just because of it. Get out and enjoy life. Realize that you need to make the most of your life.

There you have the top 8 most common phobias and how to fight them. Fighting them isn’t hard to do, it all involves controlling your mind. Ask yourself why you have the phobia. Why are you so scared? Is it really going to hurt you or are you just over reacting? Think before you do. So, what is your phobia?

Willow and Jaden Smith are possibly getting their own fashion lines. Details on this and why their parents’ Broadwaymusical is getting sued when you read on…

Willow and Jaden are definitely two fashion forward kids with their own sense of style and someone has taken notice. According to Rihanna’s stylist, Mariel Haenn, they may soon have their own fashion line.

Mariel is working with the two of them to help them develop their own signature styles. Mariel has also noticed similarities between Willow and her other client Rihanna.

Mariel says, “Willow is definitely inspired by Rihanna’s style. We make an effort to give Willow her own style, so as not to be a mini-version of Rihanna, but Willow really knows what she likes and what she doesn’t like and she’s vocal about it.”

This would definitely be an interesting clothing line to see.

Willow and Jaden’s parents are in a bit of a legal mess with their play FELA!

A photographer is suing the production for unauthorized use of one of her photographs. According to the photographer, the photo is visible in the play for 40% of the play, including a 16-minute intermission. The photo also appears in the playbill with an attribution to another photographer.

A spokesperson for FELA! said the suit was without merit and they tried to resolve the claim, but could not, and are now in the process of replacing the image.

We’ve all been in a doomed relationship or two in our lifetime, but most of the time, those doomed relationships are doomed by the mistakes that we make. Well, no more. The following is a list of the most common relationship mistakes for you to avoid!

1. Talking about your ex

Telling your guy about your past when he asks is fine, sometimes you just have to know when to put the lid on all of that. It’s ok to speak about your past, it’s another thing entirely to reminisce on multiple occasions. Don’t tell your new man all the things your ex did to make you mad or make you laugh. Let him find your buttons without you having to tell him about them.

2. Playing Games

Keeping a few mysterious traits in your relationship keeps things interesting, playing head games just makes things go bad pretty quickly. The person you’re with shouldn’t feel like a pawn in some elaborate relationship chess game you’ve created. If you want a happy relationship, don’t play games, you may wind up losing your fellah.

3. Not being honest about your needs

You know how communication is key to any great relationship? No? Then I’m going to go ahead and say that your relationships aren’t as successful as you’d like them to be. You need to be honest about the direction you want things to go in. If you don’t tell him where you want things to go, things are going to either stay solitary or go in whichever direction he decides to take them.

4. Getting Physical too soon

The biggest problem with bringing sex in too soon is that once it’s brought in, it can’t be taken out. And if you don’t have anything else to base your relationship on, that’ll become the main focus. And when that focus loses fizzle or just doesn’t happen, you’ll begin to see the cracks in your relationship.

5. Being too clingy

There’s not a whole lot of things that can ruin a relationship faster than clinging. You have to have your own life. A constant stream of texts is cute when that’s the main line of communication but sometimes, you have to take a break. Let him come to you. Before you become a stage five clinger.

6. Always saying yes

This ties in to having your own life and not being too clingy. If your guy asks you out everyday, you cannot say yes every time. Take a day or two in between if you’re not busy. But saying yes all the time makes you look a little bit desperate and like you don’t have a lot going on. Be busy but available. Let him know that you’d like to see him but you have plans!

7. Having the commitment talk too soon

The night after you meet is not the time to talk about how long you plan to be together, just like the week after you meet isn’t the time to talk about getting married. If you have the commitment talk too soon your guy might think that you want to be with him just to get to the finish line, not to actually be with him. So take a breath, down shift, and let things happen on their own.

The 32-year-old was recently dating her sister’s “The Game” co-star Hosea Chanchez. But she and Adam are now back on and more serious than ever.

But it’s not all roses. A source tells E! Online:

“They were engaged a few years ago, but broke it off,” the insider says. “They have been dating on and off for the past year and now he has put a ring on her finger once again.”

“Her family is not crazy about him,” the source says. “Tia and Adam don’t always get along, but the couple are happy together and giving it another try.”

Interesting. Hopefully her new Lifetime movie Double Wedding was good practice for her own real-life nuptials. Congrats to the couple!

Paramount Tells Dre to “Show Me The Money!”

On the West side, super producer Dr. Dre is facing financial problems of his own. He is being sued my Paramount Recording Studios for $1,220,500 for breach of contract. Although this studio has been home to him for the last ten years, Paramount is claiming that Dr. Dre and his Aftermath label rented “recording studios and services” for April 2009 until June of 2010 but never paid for them. Dr. Dre agreed to settle the bill but never did so.

Come on Dre. Pay yo’ bills. We do not want to wait another 10 years for the Detox album to finally be released.
