First Lady Michelle Obama will speak to Detroit students on Friday

As part of her Reach Higher initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama will speak at Detroit’s first-ever citywide College Signing Day on Friday, hosted by the Detroit College Access Network at Wayne State University. More than 1,500 students from more than 40 Detroit high schools will participate in the rally.

In her keynote remarks, the First Lady will highlight the importance of students pursuing and completing a form of higher education, and students doing their part to answer the President’s call for America to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. 20-year-old suspect fatally shot by fugitive task force officer

One person has died after an officer-involved shooting on Detroit’s west side.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said in a news conference Monday afternoon that a task force was serving an arrest warrant at a home on Evergreen Road, just north of West Chicago, when an officer shot a 20-year-old, who was killed.

Craig says the officers did not force their way into the home, and says the officer fired the weapon after he was faced with some sort of threat.

Lightning beat Red Wings, 5-2, to force Game 7

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings, 5-2, Monday night at Joe Louis Arena to force a Game 7.

Tyler Johnson got the Lightning on the board first when he busted in from the wing and shot it under the bar at 3:47 into the 1st period.

About 7 minutes later defenseman Jason Garrison caught the Red Wings forwards on a change and jumped up on the rush to give the Lightning a 4-on-3. Steven Stamkos found Garrison trailing and the defenseman was able to put it past Petr Mrazek, making it 2-0.
