Lions defensive end Jason Jones honored with jersey retirement by Southfield-Lathrup High School
When Jason Jones signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions prior to the 2013 season, a homecoming of sorts was in store for a player that grew up in Southfield, attending Lathrup High School.
On Monday, Jones was the guest of honor at his former school, as Lathrup welcomed he and his family for a special jersey retirement ceremony at halftime of a Chargers varsity boys basketball game.
Jones played football at Lathrup for two seasons before graduating in 2004 and heading off to Eastern Michigan on an athletic scholarship.
His No. 19 jersey is the first to be retired by Lathrup.
Moved by the gesture, Jones addressed the crowd with a speech to give thanks and reflect upon his time as a Charger. He also announced a donation of $5,000 to the school. Hopefully one day somebody else follows suit.
Jones played outside linebacker as a high school junior and split time between safety and tight end as a senior. Once at Eastern Michigan, Jones quickly converted to defensive end and was later selected in the second round of the NFL Draft, 54th overall, by the Tennessee Titans in 2008.
Seven of Jones’ Detroit Lions teammates were in attendance to support him during the ceremony. Joique Bell, Ndamukong Suh and the majority of the team’s defensive linemen cheered for Jones and later posed for pictures.
On Sunday, Jones turned in one of the critical plays of the Lions’ 16-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings when he blocked a short field goal attempt in the second half. Following Monday’s ceremony, he spoke of his pride in helping restore success to the franchise so far this season. In 14 games this season, Jones has recorded four sacks and forced two fumbles. He has one year remaining on his current contract with Detroit.
Priest who stole from charity gets unusual sentence
A local priest accused of stealing from a charity received an unusual sentence.
Father Timothy Kane was sentenced to 12 months in the Wayne County Jail for stealing money from the Angel Fund.
The fund was created by the Archdiocese of Detroit to help people in need.
But the 58-year-old priest will only have to serve the time in December and June for the next five years.
The probation department will decide how he spends the final two months of the sentence.
Kane was also given five years probation and he must pay $131,400 in restitution.
Sentencing guidelines called for a sentence of 36 to 60 months.
Elderly man’s car snatched
It is a story reported all too often – an elderly person in Detroit targeted by criminals.
Barrow, 78, who is partially blind and battling numerous health problems, had his burgundy Chevrolet Impala stolen Monday morning on Detroit’s west side.
His niece uses the car to drive Barrow, the first cousin of boxing legend Joe Louis, around. It happened a little more than a week away from Barrow’s birthday. He turns 79 on Dec. 23.
Barrow is partially blind, he has multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and takes an array of medications daily.
He believes the suspect who took his vehicle, must have known that he can barely see. Just thinking about it, Barrow gets fighting mad. Barrow wants Detroit police to get down to the bottom of the crime.
Detroit police search for missing 21-year-old
Detroit police are asking for the public’s help to locate a missing 21-year-old.
Tyson Logan-Leftwich was last seen by his father on December 13 around 4:30 p.m. in the area of Warren and Beaconsfield.
Tyson is around 5’5″, 117 pounds with hazel eyes and sandy brown hair.
