There was kind of a lot going on at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. Lucky for you, #TeamBeautiful has a recap!

Nicki Minaj opened the 2014 VMAS with her best take on Jane of the Jungle (or maybe Eve) as she wiggled her way around the stage for “Anaconda.” She didn’t perform the entire song, but it was part of fantastic medley with Ariana Grande and Jessie J, as they came together to wrap their set up with their new single “Bang Bang.”

She made her way to the stage again later to assist Usher with “She Came To Give It To You.” Usher is a man of many talents and looks good holding a guitar but should probably stick to the dancing. Watch him get closer to Nicki’s booty than any man before!

The night belonged to Beyoncé. Hands down. She literally shut the show down with her express version of The Mrs. Carter Show before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from her husband Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy! And how cute was it that Blue was dancing along to “Flawless”?! If you weren’t watching the All Access live feed on MTV.com, you might have missed that. Trust me, it was adorable! Bey’s clearly taught her daughter the moves.

All the drama between Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Jay Z and Beyoncé looked to be completely fabricated because Hov greeted Kim with a hug before moving on to the seats specially reserved for Beyoncé’s people. (Side note: Kanye let Kim wear colors today! YAY!). Obviously, Kelly Rowland and Tina Knowles were among the privileged few to snag a spot there. Michelle Williams was at the VMAs, but the camera did not catch her with the Knowles-Carters party. Maybe the camera man couldn’t fit her (or Solange) in the shot.

Jennifer Lopez, who seemed very friendly with her ex-boyfriend Casper Smart during the show, looked a bit unimpressed with Bey’s performance.

However, J.Lo was shining bright like a diamond as she presented Iggy Azalea‘s performance of “Black Widow.” Love her or hate her, Iggy’s performance was phenomenal. She wasn’t better than Bey, but she was a close second–and she even managed not to fall off stage this time. Good for you, Iggy!

Taylor Swift momentarily changed out of her peacock onesie to put on a two-piece flapper outfit as she performed a Great Gatsby-inspired performance of “Shake It Off.” Glad to see she had the good sense not to recreate her twerk-tastic video for the stage.

A picture is worth a 1,000 words, but backstage video from the VMAs broadcast a fairly simply message: Ariana Grande and Big Sean are a thing! The pair were spotted holding hands as she made her way to her dressing room for a costume change after winning her award for Best Female Video!

We all know that Katy Perry loves a costume, and this year she used an actual person as an accessory when she recreated Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake‘s all-denim-everything look from back in the day. Should JT be offended that Katy had Riff Raff impersonate him? Probably so! Then again, we all remember his horrendous cornrows…so that might have been an accurate casting. (It’s okay, Justin! Everyone makes mistakes.)

The VMAs are probably music’s hottest party (behind the Grammys); Common brought a moment of levity to the night as he led everyone in a moment of silence for Michael Brown and Eric Garner before presenting the award for Best Hip Hop Video. Drake won that award BTW.

Miley Cyrus took home the big prize of the night as she won the Video of the Year Award for “Wrecking Ball,” snagging another win from Iggy Azalea’s clutches. T.I.‘s protégé didn’t stick around much longer after losing the award. She did kind of get a win with Ariana. Chin up, Iggy! There’s always next year.

Although Miley was in the audience, she had a very special guest accept her award, bringing light to the plight of the nation’s homeless. His simple speech moved the singer to tears. It was a surprisingly mature moment from Miley.
