Kerry Washington and Rev. Al Sharpton faced criticism in some corners for appearing on a “Saturday Night Live“ skit mocking the show’s lack of black women in the cast.

At the end of the skit, Sharpton faced the screen and said, “What have we learned from this skit? As usual, nothing.”

Roland Martin asked the longtime activist and MSNBC host what he’d tell people who say he shouldn’t have been in on the joke.

“For them to make a statement,” Sharpton said, “and…to emphasize it is for critics to appear asinine.”

In the clip below, hear what else Sharpton had to say about the flap, the talk he had with SNL’s founding producer Lorne Michaels and the importance of having Kerry Washington host the show last weekend.
