IndyStar.com reports, The Indianapolis Colts officially have used the franchise tag on their Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis  but are expected to finalize a long-term contract.

Today the team and Mathis’ agent were unable to iron out the details on a multi-year contract prior to today’s 4 o’clock deadline.

“First and foremost, we’re going to make sure that we put both of those guys (Mathis and Freeny) in position to make plays,’’ Pagano said during the recent NFL Scouting Combine even though Mathis was due to become a free agent March 13. “I don’t think it would be very smart on my part or anybody else’s part to not make sure that doesn’t happen.

“Both of those guys have been great players and have been for a long time.”

The Colts face another deadline with Peyton Manning’s 28 million dollar bonus this Thursday. We will keep you updated on InDecision 2012 here!
