Ice-T calls Rick Ross a wannabe
“Rick Ross stole a n***s name. I call him ‘Identity Crisis,’” Ice said during an interview with VH1 to promote the upcoming special, “Hip Hop and the Crack Generation.”
The original Ricky Ross is a street legend and convicted drug dealer who Ice considers a friend.
“He came to my wedding,” Ice said about the Ricky who was profiled on “American Gangster” and is featured on the VH1 show.
As “Hip Hop and the Crack Generation” makes clear, Ice-T, Snoop Dogg and other popular rap artists considered the music an escape from their lives as hustlers. In contrast, Rick Ross the rapper was once in law enforcement. Ice-T spoke on that, too.
“When we rapped about dope—me, Snoop and everybody—it was like we doin’ it because we GOT to. Now these n****s acting like it’s somethin’ that’s fun. It’s so easy to fantasize about it. To actively do it? That’s a whole ‘nother … thing,” said Ice, who doesn’t like the direction in which hip-hop is heading.
“’Rap is not pop. If you call it that, then stop’,” he said quoting a line from A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip. “Rap was a counterculture that went against pop. But when you have Rihanna singin’ on your records and you’re doin’ records with Katy Perry, that’s no longer rap. It’s pop music.”
